Iceland’s Best Waterfalls: Pick Your Favorite

Europe

For my money, the very best things in Iceland are, in no particular order: northern lights, hot springs and pools, bubbling and steaming earth, hikes over otherworldly landscapes—and waterfalls! If you’re on the hunt for the best waterfalls in Iceland, you won’t have to look far.

Iceland’s Wonderful Waterfalls

With tall mountains, shifting tectonic plates, snowmelt, glacier-fed rivers, and what feels like daily precipitation, waterfalls are bound to be both tall and plentiful. In fact, multiple websites claim that Iceland boasts over 10,000 of these watery spills. Of course, that counts everything from Morsárfoss, the tallest waterfall at 228 meters, to tiny waterfalls that bump and bubble over rocks that are barely waist-high.

Wondering which one(s) to visit — or just want to see some amazing views? Take a look to pick your very own best waterfall in Iceland.

Brúarfoss

Low, wide, Brúarfoss Waterfall in Iceland in late winter, with icy waters flowing down over the falls and carving a bright blue river path through the rocks

Djúpagilsfoss

Djúpagilsfoss Waterfall in Reykjadalur, Iceland, cascading down brown, snow-dusted hillsides, contrasting with the rugged winter landscape

Faxafoss

Faxafoss Waterfall in Iceland, a wide cascade set against a bright blue sky, with water flowing over a broad, stright rock ledge

Gljúfrabúi

Looking straight up toward the sun shining through the mist and cascading waters of Gljúfrabúi Waterfall, Iceland

Gullfoss

Gullfoss Waterfall in Iceland on a cloudy day, with powerful cascades plunging into a rugged canyon under an overcast sky

Hlauptungufoss

Hlauptungufoss Waterfall in Iceland, a short but powerful cascade with bright light blue water rushing over dark volcanic rock

Editor’s note: Getting to Hlauptungufoss required a super-muddy hike in April, but this was my favorite one!

Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell Waterfall in Iceland, some of the falls frozen into ice, surrounded by snow with the iconic Kirkjufell mountain in the background

That’s what it looks like half-frozen — and here it is just two days later after a terrific storm:

Kirkjufell Waterfall in Iceland rushing over rocky ledges on a clear blue sky day, with the distinct peak of Kirkjufell mountain in the background

Laxfoss

Laxfoss Waterfall in West Iceland, a long, broad, and low cascade whose name means "Salmon Falls," gently flowing over wide rock formations in a peaceful late winter setting

Miðfoss

Midfoss Waterfall, a short and rushing cascade on the trail to Brúarfoss Waterfall, with snowy mountains in the background

Öxarárfoss

Öxarárfoss Waterfall, located in Þingvellir National Park, Iceland, a short but stunning waterfall cascading over rocky terrain, surrounded by rugged cliffs, with a historical backdrop as part of the ancient site of Iceland’s first parliament

Another note: this waterfall may be small, but it rates a special mention because it falls down right over the cliffs of the Almannagjá Gorge, the spot where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Iceland, featuring a majestic cascade with a vibrant rainbow arcing through the mist, falling into a pool next to snowy ground, surrounded by dramatic cliffs

Selvallafoss

Multiple cascades of Selvallafoss Waterfall, also known as "Sheep's Falls," hidden and isolated in the snow of Vatnaleið, Iceland, with alls cascading down rocky terrain, surrounded by a serene, remote, snowy landscape

Skógafoss
