Many places in Asia are teeming with tourists: Thailand, Bali, China, Japan. Others—like Vietnam and Malaysia—are quickly rising in popularity. These destinations attract millions of visitors each year. So why isn’t Sri Lanka on that list? It offers everything travelers love: beaches, mountains, delicious food, friendly folks—even charismatic megafauna casually wandering down the road.

Here’s why travelers may end up skipping Sri Lanka—and why that needs to change.

Why Sri Lanka is Often Overlooked

(1) Perceived Political Instability: “Isn’t there a civil war going on there?” No, there isn’t—and there hasn’t been since 2009. But because the war lasted for 26 years, some people think it’s still dragging on. Also, there were mass anti-government protests in 2022, and while those were triggered by an economic crisis that’s now largely over, they added to the country’s image problem. All of this is enough to make some prospective tourists think twice.

(2) Confusion With India: Sri Lanka and India are only 54 kilometers apart by sea …

… so it’s easy to assume that they’re similar travel destinations. But in reality, Sri Lanka is remarkably distinct, from its ancient history to its Buddhist-majority culture to its overall vibe: Sri Lanka is quieter, tidier, and more laid-back than its giant neighbor to the north.

(3) Location: If you’re hopping around Asia, it’s a quick trip from Thailand to Vietnam or from Malaysia to Singapore. Sri Lanka requires a flight that takes it off those well-trodden paths. But it’s more accessible than you might think—there are direct flights from hubs like Bangkok, Singapore, and even the Middle East. And SriLankan Airlines offers fantastic service: when our flight was delayed by just an hour, they handed out goodie bags with water, juice, soda, and chips. I’ve done a lot of flying in my time, and I’ve never seen an airline respond so thoughtfully to a delay.

(4) Lack of Marketing: Sri Lanka simply doesn’t market itself as aggressively as Thailand or Bali. (I can find Thai Airways billboards just two blocks from my Singapore home. Sri Lankan Airlines? Zero.) As a result, many travelers are left in the dark about what Sri Lanka has to offer.

There are so many reasons to visit Sri Lanka: long, sandy beaches with turquoise blue water, abundant wildlife, adventure opportunities like surfing and hiking, a laid-back atmosphere, warm and welcoming people, and some of the best food in the region. You’ll find endless scenery everywhere, from the hill country tea plantations …

… to the low-lying national parks …

… as well as World Heritage sites like Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, and Galle Fort …

… iconic train journeys ...

… and did I mention the wildlife?

Following the classic travel route—Colombo to the tea country, then the national parks, and finally the beaches—you can get from one stop to the next in just a few hours’ drive. And along the way, it’s a delight to look out the window and take in the scenery of people going about their lives

As a bonus, Sri Lanka can be very affordable! If you need them, budget-friendly accommodations and food abound.

Once you leave Colombo (which, to be honest, isn’t the most charming capital city), you may never want to leave. What a beautiful place!
